I'm dreaming of a beigey-brown Christmas
It is ironic in some regards that while we have had one winter storm, so far more snow has been seen by the Netherlands and Maryland than in Southern Ontario. Really, that says more about global weirding than a gaggle of politicians in Copenhagen ever could. Current Mood: confused |

XM Radio's Billing Department: A bunch of morons
Good freaking lord, what a bunch of morons. So I called in on November 6th and put a $100 XM service card credit onto my account. Since then, they've tried to bill me $71.69 on November 15th, December 1st, December 8th and today, December 15th, despite the fact that I have a $28.31 CREDIT on my account. I called them at least last 3 weeks to tell them that they've inappropriately tried to bill me and to stop their automated system from billing me. Each time they've told me they're going to stop the system from billing my account. Now they tell me that they have to RETURN my $28.31 credit to my credit card, despite the fact that I told them to leave it on the system so that I don't have to pay as much in the next billing cycle! I ended up having to speak to a manager and talking with him and told him that if it happens again next week, I'm calling him directly and he needs to do something for me because of this repeated inconvenience. I wish to god there was another satellite radio provider than XM/Sirius in Canada, I would sooooo cancel my service with XM right now because of this frustration. I even told the manager that. |

A very old man lay dying in his bed. In death's doorway, he suddenly smelled the aroma of his favorite chocolate chip cookie wafting up the stairs. He gathered his remaining strength and lifted himself from the bed.. Leaning against the wall, he slowly made his way out of the bedroom, and with even greater effort forced himself down the stairs, gripping the railing with both hands. With labored breath, he leaned against the door frame, gazing into the kitchen. Were it not for death's agony, he would have thought himself already in heaven. There, spread out on newspapers on the kitchen table were literally hundreds of his favorite chocolate chip cookies. Was it heaven? Or was it one final act of heroic love from his devoted wife, seeing to it that he left this world a happy man? ( Read more... ) Current Mood: amused |

Kitchen Aid upgrade
Thanks to my Dad, I now have an attachment pack for the Kitchen Aid. It consists of a meat grinder (woohoo!), a fruit/veg strainer, and a shredder/slicer. I am very excited by this. Thrilled, actually. I was more thrilled to discover that almost every grocery store in my area has seriously discounted meat on sale right now. A quick check indicates that this is because supply is currently outweighting demand for animal products, but it means that it is perfect timing for grabbing some cheap cute of meat and trying out the grinder. We picked up some steaks on sale... a pack of what I think is chuck steak (judging from the description I found on several websites and in a couple of books I have), and 2 T-bones that were at the absolutly insane price of $2.99/lb. I figured the T-bones would give me the base for a beef broth as well as ground beef, which would be good since hubby has been expressing a desire for a rich beef stew at some point in the near future. After meticulously cleaning everything (anything you read on grinding meat will give you detailed warnings on what will happen if hands, knives, equipment and surfaces are not spotless -- which gives a better idea on why ground meat is so easily contaminated in the factory setting), I chopped the steak into small cubes, placing batches in the fridge until I was done them all. Hubby was setting up the attachment before I was done, anxious to give it a whirl. (He is such a bitcher at heart, I swear if he wasn't a programmer he would definitely find a place in a small shop hawking cuts of meat to little old ladies.:) ) We used the coarse die, which means it created thicker strands of meat. We ran the T-bone cubes through first. They seemed to have a fair amount of gristle that kept clogging up the plate, and so is probably not well suited for ground meat (honestly, if it weren't for that price I would never have considered it in the first place, and it wasn't mentioned in any of the reading as a cut to be used for this anyhow). Then we used the chuck steak. It was a darker colour, and seemed to grind much more smoothly. We actually ran both types through twice to get a nicer, more even grind than we saw on the first go through. Most of the meat was put into freezer bags and labelled for future use. I made sure that the beef wasn't too thick in the bags, and even, so it would freeze quickly. Some was left in the fridge overnight for mini-meatloaves, which I cooked up yesterday, but haven't tried yet. They are sitting in the fridge to be reheated for dinner tonight. All in all, a great adventure. I could get the hang of this, and I think that hubby is feeling the same way. Next step will be figuring out the other attachments... I see a lot of possibilities. This cooking thing can be quite fun, can't it? :) Current Mood: accomplished |

Sunday morning...
Coffee is made, bread is rising, muffins are baking... and it's not even 8 am. And I haven't even started my cooking yet. I guess this is what I get for not doing my baking Saturday afternoon like I've been doing recently. Yesterday's dizzy spell sort of kaiboshed that. And since we're going to the in-laws after lunch, it's going to be an insane morning. Oh yeah. I still need to make breakfast too... Current Mood: busy |
